About Sugar Bee Cooks' Sugar Elisa Brown

Born in Austin and raised in Los Angeles, I am deeply connected to the food of both regions.

My earliest food memories are of my Granny’s kitchen - her homemade rolls, pecan pie, and banana bread. Southern cuisine is the culinary equivalent of hug and nowhere else is there such a profound connection between love and food. That connection continues to influence everything I do in the kitchen.

I was fortunate to come up as a Chef in Southern California where there is an emphasis on clean, fresh, plant centric and organic foods. Gorgeous, abundant produce and fresh seafood along with vast ethnic culinary building blocks provided an incredible backdrop to learn. In 2012, after many years as passionate self-taught home cook, I left a successful career as a Contemporary Art Dealer to attend The New School of Cooking in Culver City, CA where I received classical training and a professional Culinary Degree. The real learning, however, has come with the experience I’ve since gained working in professional kitchens and as a Personal Chef. A summer of staging Sunday Suppers at Lucques in West Hollywood (James Beard Award winning restaurant), and time spent interning at downtown Los Angeles restaurant Alma (Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurant 2012) profoundly influenced the way I see and work with food. Upon relocating to Pittsburgh, PA in 2016 I joined forces with a partner and together we launched an exciting new endeavor - a luxury prepared meal delivery service Thyme - A Modern Cookery. While a booming success, after a year of service we decided to follow different paths - I was eager to return to the intimate setting of client's kitchens and cooking for events small and large.

At the end of the day, no matter if I’m cooking in a private home or prepping for a big catered event, it always comes back to my roots - to the love! I am eternally grateful to do what I enjoy, it is an honor to nourish and enrich my clients’ lives through good food.

"In my nearly 30 years of dining in people’s homes and tasting the work of their personal chefs, I have not encountered anyone that has the number of talents in such perfect balance as Sugar. Any family would be fortunate indeed to have her as a personal chef."

Alyce, Private Client, Los Angeles, CA

"Sugar is a wonderful chef. She discussed meal options with me and kept our refrigerator full of good things to eat. She is lovely and has such a nice presence that we enjoyed having her our home."

Franny, Private Client, Pittsburgh, PA

“This summer my wife and I hosted a two-day garden party for close to 300 friends celebrating our house being in the family for 100 years.

We received so many thank you notes from our guests, just about all of whom complimented the extraordinary efforts of Thyme--A Modern Cookery whom we hired to do the catering for the event.

I must add that they went the extra mile in preparing for the event by putting together a potential menu for us to consider and then coming to our home a month in advance to go over all details and get the lay of the land of our home and kitchen.

Besides being well organized and both creative and practical with their menu choices, both Sugar and Christina are charming and easy-going. making it easy to relax at our own party, knowing that they are taking care of everything."
